Most of us lead full busy lives filled with obligations.  It’s easy to become overwhelmed with so much to focus on.  Sometimes the busy pace of our lives can leave us so frazzled we crash and burn before we ever see it coming.  Burnout is a natural consequence of a life that becomes so full and busy that there’s no time to stop the merry go round.  This is why it’s extremely important to practice balance no matter how busy our lives are.

The Value in Taking Breaks

Learning to mix in strategic breaks with your obligations is the best way to stay afloat and prevent burnout from occurring.  This is not a natural process.  This takes a certain measure of awareness and intentional control of your time.  You could be a busy college professor who needs to work on their neuroscience curriculum development. The pressure may be high as the deadline nears, however, making the time to take a couple of hours off before exhaustion sets in becomes key.

Meeting Your Own Unique Needs

The first thing that you must understand when it comes to your schedule and your obligations is that your needs will be inherently different from someone else’s.  Resist the urge to compare.  Instead, focus on being as innovative as possible in your quest to schedule breaks from your busy schedule and obligations.  These breaks should take place at key moments that help you to avoid overload.

Have a Flexible Attitude

There will be times when a planned scheduled break doesn’t work.  Resist the urge to spend a lot of time on something that isn’t working.  Fail fast.  Make changes as you see fit.  This is a part of the development process needed for creating a schedule that will superbly fit your lifestyle, needs, and the demands of your schedule.

Creating balance in a busy life is not the easiest task to undertake, but it’s necessary.  Recognize the importance of scheduling breaks into your busy life.  However, be flexible when something you planned doesn’t work as well as you hoped.  Make changes as you see fit and understand that your needs are unique.  What works for someone else may not work for you.  As long as you are committing to creating a sense of balance in your hectic schedule, you will be successful, even if it takes a few tries to accomplish it.
